Among the oldest mountains on earth, the Great Smokies preserve an outstanding example of deciduous forest with a multitude of plants and animals. 1,600 species of flowering plants cover the peaks and valleys of the 800 square miles of the park. The water and hydrocarbons produced by the leaves of the dense vegetation create the hazy "smoke" that gives the mountains their name. The nation's most visited park, nine million visitors can explore almost 400 miles of mountain roads and 800 miles of hiking trails.
