The San Rafael Swell is an 80 by 40 mile sandstone dome in east central Utah. The eastern flank consists of enormous jagged, nearly vertical slabs of sandstone and is known as the "reef". Many slot canyons cut through this impenetrable barrier. The Swell features a beautiful canyon not unlike the Grand Canyon, numerous buttes and mesas, ancient Native American pictographs and rock art, and even a dinosaur footprint in stone. There are only four wheel drive roads in this amazing wilderness few people know exists.
