Great Sand Dunes National Park in south central Colorado features the tallest sand dunes in North America. The dunes lie on a high desert plain at 8200 feet elevation bordered by the Sangre De Cristo mountains rising to over 13,000 feet. The dunefield encompases 30 square miles and the park includes several diverse ecosystems. Mule deer, black bears, and rarely seen mountain lions inhabit the park.
