This national monument lies within the Chiricahua Mountains of southeast Arizona. Formed from a volcanic eruption 27 million years ago they are composed of layers of rock called rhyolite tuff. Erosion has created the pinnacles, spires, balanced rocks, and strange shapes we see today.
